Surf City at the End of Summer

Labor Day is September 7 this year, and the week after it is the best week on Topsail Island. That is not a sales line. The water is still warm, the crowds are gone, and almost everything is still open.

Here is what the island looks like once the season lets go.

The water does not cool off when the calendar does

Ocean temperatures on this stretch run in the low 80s through September and hold in the mid to low 70s through most of October. You can swim comfortably long after the rental crowd has packed up. Most people do not know that, which is the whole reason September and October are worth having.

Parking gets easier, not free

Fair warning. Surf City runs paid parking March 1 through October 31, 9am to 6pm, at 3 to 6 dollars an hour. The spaces open up after Labor Day. The meters do not. Budget for it until Halloween.

What is open

Surf City Ocean Pier at 112 South Shore Drive is open 24 hours a day, year round. Fall is the better fishing anyway. Cooler water brings in red drum, speckled trout and false albacore, and most serious anglers on this island will tell you fall outfishes summer.

Soundside Park on Roland Avenue has the kayak and paddleboard launches and the boardwalks over the marsh. September mornings out there are quiet in a way July never is.

Salty Turtle Beer Company is the brewery in town. Salt Marsh Market on Charlie Medlin Drive is a gourmet grocery and bottle shop with a small bar, which is more than the beach convenience store you might be picturing. Shaka Taco on North Shore Drive is the original location, open since 2017.

Turtles

September is hatching season, not nesting season. Nesting runs May through August. Hatchlings come out from July into October, and Topsail Turtle Project volunteers walk the full 26 miles of beach every morning in season.

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is on Tortuga Lane in mainland Surf City, not on the island, which surprises people. Tours are guided, reservations are required, and each slot caps at 15. September hours are reduced. Book before you drive over.

One fall date worth the calendar

Autumn With Topsail runs October 16 through 18 at the Assembly Building on Channel Boulevard in Topsail Beach. 37th year, run by the Historical Society of Topsail Island, 110 plus artists, beach music and a food court. Admission runs 5 to 17 dollars. It is the biggest fall event on the island and a good reason to come back a month after Labor Day.

The thing most people looking here do not know yet

On August 18, 2026, Surf City and the Army Corps of Engineers signed the partnership agreement for the Coastal Storm Risk Management project. 362.3 million dollars authorized under WRDA 2026. Six and a half million cubic yards of sand across the six mile shoreline. Bids go out fall 2027, construction starts early 2028, and the work finishes spring 2029.

That is the biggest thing to happen to Surf City in a decade and it cuts both ways. A federally maintained beach changes the long term risk picture on a barrier island. It also means equipment on the sand for a year and a half starting in 2028. Both are true and you should hear both.

Worth knowing that North Topsail Beach withdrew from the joint project in 2021 and its portion was deauthorized. The three towns on this island no longer share the same beach protection future. If you are comparing them, that is not a small difference.

What living here is like, as opposed to visiting

Surf City has roughly 3,900 permanent residents and many times that in July. The gap between those two numbers is the character of the place. It is a real town in October and a resort in July.

The high rise bridge opened in December 2018 and replaced the 1954 swing bridge. Getting on and off the island stopped being a scheduling problem that year.

Schools are Pender County Schools for most addresses, but Surf City straddles the Onslow and Pender line, so it depends where you land. Surf City Elementary, Surf City Middle and Topsail High are all on the mainland, not on the island, and Topsail High is about 20 minutes off the beach. FYI, seven schools in the Topsail and Surf City cluster are over capacity right now, and a new K-8 called J.H. Lea opens fall 2027 with boundaries set in January of that year.

Groceries are the Publix at the Arboretum on NC 210. It has been open since 2018, so do not let anyone sell it to you as new.

If you are thinking about it

September and October are the honest months on Topsail. The island is not performing for anyone. If you want to know what living here actually feels like, come now instead of in July.
