Theme: Beach Time, Local Flavors & Coastal Exploration

Accommodation: Your chosen vacation rental home in Surf City or Topsail.

Friday Evening: Arrival & Coastal Welcome

  • Afternoon: Arrive at your vacation rental! Unpack, settle in, and let the anticipation of a beach weekend begin.

  • Late Afternoon: The ocean awaits! Head straight for the nearest beach access. Feel the sand between your toes, listen to the waves, and breathe in the fresh, salty air. It's the perfect way to unwind after traveling.

  • Dinner: Keep the first night easy and delicious. Grab a casual, family-friendly meal at a local favorite. Max's Pizza in Surf City is always a hit with families, or check out Surf City BBQ for some Carolina classic flavors. Plenty of other spots offer kid-friendly menus!

  • Evening: Relax at your rental. Play a card game, enjoy the view from your deck, or take a short, peaceful walk on the beach as the stars begin to appear.

Saturday: Island Exploration & Local Gems

  • Morning (Option 1 - Active): Start the day with a coastal activity! Look into local businesses like Surf City Paddleboard or Topsail Island Watersports for kayak or paddleboard rentals and tours on the soundside – a great way to see wildlife in calmer waters. You could also book a family surf lesson!

  • Morning (Option 2 - Classic Beach Fun): Spend the morning enjoying the main attraction – the beach! Build elaborate sandcastles, hunt for unique shells (especially after high tide), swim, and play in the waves.

  • Lunch: Grab a casual bite. Stacked Coastal Kitchen offers great options perfect for lunch. Or, swing by a local deli or market (like Publix or Food Lion) to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch on the beach.

  • Afternoon:

    • Unique Local Experience: Visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Centerin Surf City (check their website for visiting hours and tour information, especially in peak season). It's an inspiring and educational stop that highlights the incredible conservation efforts happening locally.

    • Alternative Fun: If sea turtles aren't for today, head to Shipwreck Point Mini Golf for some family mini-golf fun! Or, explore the unique shops around the Surf City traffic circle – Quarter Moon Books & Art is a lovely spot to browse.

  • Late Afternoon: Head back to your rental or the beach for some downtime before dinner. Enjoy a dip in the pool if your rental has one.

  • Dinner: Experience more of the island's culinary scene. For dinner with an ocean view, try Daddy Mac's Oceanfront Grille on the pier (reservations often recommended). If you want more of a casual experience then Shaka Taco for coastal Mexican food or The Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar is another popular spot for fresh seafood in a lively atmosphere.

  • Evening: Take an evening stroll on the Surf City Pier. Pay a small fee to walk out over the ocean – it's breezy and offers great views. Afterward, cool off with a treat from local ice cream spots like Celtic Creamery.

Sunday: Last Memories & Farewell Bites

  • Morning: Enjoy your final morning on the island. Take one last walk on the beach, try fishing from the Surf City Pier, or simply relax and enjoy the sunrise and the sound of the waves from your rental.

  • Brunch or Lunch: Have a final, delicious meal before heading home. Surf City Smash is great for a casual Sunday lunch. Many cafes and restaurants offer weekend brunch specials.

  • Late Morning/Early Afternoon: Begin packing up and preparing for departure. Follow your rental property's checkout instructions.

  • Departure: As you leave the island, maybe stop for one last photo op or pick up a final souvenir from a local shop to remember your trip.

Helpful Tips for Your Family Weekend:

  • Check Hours: Always verify the operating hours and any admission requirements for attractions and restaurants, especially outside of peak season. Reservations are wise for dinner spots on busy nights.

  • Pack Smart: Bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, beach towels, beach chairs, beach toys, and maybe a beach umbrella or tent for shade. Water shoes can be helpful.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during warm weather.

  • Respect the Dunes: Help protect our beautiful coastline by staying off the dunes and using designated beach access points.

  • Leave No Trace: Please pack out everything you pack in to keep our beaches clean and enjoyable for everyone.

  • Groceries: Publix and Food Lion are convenient grocery stores on the island for stocking up your rental kitchen.
