Prime Birding Locations

Wilmington Area

  • Airlie Gardens (Wilmington): An official site on the North Carolina Birding Trail. The mix of ancient oaks, freshwater lakes, and cultivated gardens makes this an easy, accessible spot for finding migratory songbirds, waterfowl, and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. They also host dedicated guided bird walks.

  • Greenfield Park (Wilmington): The moss-draped cypress trees surrounding this freshwater lake are a haven for Anhingas, Wood Ducks, Great Blue Herons, and Ospreys.

  • Masonboro Island Reserve (Wrightsville Beach / Carolina Beach): Accessible only by boat, this 5,600-acre undisturbed barrier island is a critical nesting ground for Black Skimmers, Wilson’s Plovers, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers.

Brunswick County

  • Bird Island Reserve (Sunset Beach): Reached by walking west from the 40th Street beach access at Sunset Beach, this pristine reserve features high dunes and over 1,000 acres of salt marsh. It is famously home to North Carolina's only regularly occurring flock of Wood Storks. During the summer, local volunteers host free guided educational birding walks every Wednesday.

  • Zeke’s Island Reserve (South of Kure Beach): Located just south of the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, this unusual, lagoon-like estuarine system features some of the most important shorebird habitats in the state.

  • The Green Swamp Preserve (Supply): Heading inland into Brunswick County, this Nature Conservancy site is famous for its carnivorous plants, but it's also one of the best places in the region to spot the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker among the longleaf pines.

Topsail Island & Northern Beaches

  • Hammocks Beach State Park / Bear Island (Swansboro): Accessible by ferry or private boat, this undeveloped island is a fantastic spot to see Piping Plovers, American Oystercatchers, Black Skimmers, and colorful Painted Buntings during the breeding season.

  • Topsail Sound & Inlets: The marshes on the sound side of Topsail Island are reliable spots for wading birds (herons, egrets, ibis), while the inlets at the extreme north and south ends are prime for spotting diving pelicans and migratory shorebirds.

  • Marshes & Soundside: Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, White Ibis, Clapper Rails, and Double-Crested Cormorants.

  • Beaches, Flats & Inlets: Laughing, Herring, and Great Black-Backed Gulls; Brown Pelicans; Piping and Wilson's Plovers; American Oystercatchers; Black Skimmers; and seasonal sandpipers.

  • Maritime Forests & Shrub Thickets: Painted Buntings (a favorite summer visitor), Ospreys, Pine Warblers, Brown-headed Nuthatches, and various woodpeckers.

  • Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours: Operating in the Wilmington area, they run specialized birding tours and general eco-cruises that navigate the Masonboro Island estuaries specifically to identify coastal birdlife.
