Biking Trails & Routes

While coastal areas are famously flat for easy cruising, the greater Wilmington area offers a few notable dedicated trail systems for those seeking distance or off-road adventure.

Parks & Nature Reserves

Wilmington Area

  • Greenfield Park (Wilmington): A stunning 250-acre park featuring moss-draped cypress trees, a 5-mile paved walking/biking path circling the lake, paddleboat rentals, and an outdoor amphitheater. Keep an eye out for alligators!

  • Carolina Beach State Park: A must-visit. It offers miles of flat, shaded hiking trails through diverse coastal habitats and is one of the only places in the world where you can see the rare Venus flytrap growing in its natural environment.

  • Long Leaf Park (Wilmington): Formerly Hugh MacRae Park, this expansive, family-friendly space features massive ancient oak trees, an inclusive playground, a splash pad, and paved walking trails.

Brunswick County

  • Brunswick Nature Park (Winnabow): Over 900 acres of completely undeveloped coastal wilderness. Aside from mountain biking, it features excellent hiking trails and a canoe/kayak launch providing access to Town Creek.

  • Ocean Isle Beach Park: A massive, beautifully maintained mainland park with an inclusive playground, an amphitheater, tennis and pickleball courts, and walking trails.

  • The Point (Oak Island): While not a traditional "park," this massive stretch of pristine beach at the far western end of the island (where the river meets the ocean) is a locally famous gathering spot for evening walks and spectacular sunset viewing.

Topsail Island & Surf City (North)

  • Soundside Park (Surf City): Features a boardwalk over the marsh, a playground, picnic shelters, a fishing pier, and a boat/kayak launch. It hosts live music and events throughout the year and is excellent for sunset views.

  • Kenneth D. Batts Family Park (Surf City): Offers a walkway across the marsh to the Intracoastal Waterway; great for sunset views and observing sound-side marine life.

  • Stump Sound Park (Mainland): Features short loop trails through longleaf pine forests, making it a great spot for birding.
